Biography
Alireza Adambakan (b. 1976, Tehran) is an Iranian contemporary painter whose practice explores the tension between tradition, religion, modernity, and social experience. Working across painting and mixed media, he develops several interconnected bodies of work, including landscapes, cityscapes, and figurative series rooted in religious and cultural imagery.
Adambakan’s paintings are characterized by layered surfaces, expressive lines, and bold, contrasting colours. His imagery draws on the traditions and religious narratives that shaped his upbringing, while addressing their place within a rapidly changing contemporary society. This tension between inherited beliefs and modern social realities forms a recurring concern throughout his practice.
He received a BA in Painting from Azad University in Tehran and has exhibited extensively since his first solo exhibition in 2002. His work has been presented in more than fifty national and international exhibitions and art fairs, and is held in private collections. Alongside his artistic practice, Adambakan teaches and has worked as a researcher and writer for art magazines and newspapers.
